CLASSES

Learn How to Make Cool Stuff

By offering classes, we hope to teach beginners and advanced learners about skills and techniques. Unless noted, all required tools and materials are provided so all the student is responsible for when they show up is learning and having fun.

The resident Mann Tool instructor, David Pietras, is a South Carolina native and has lived in Columbia for 53 years. He started woodworking in 1978 when he was hired by Doc Wildes Funky House Building CompanyTools. His love for the forests and his passion for wood shows in many of his designs and projects. One of his favorite things he has done in his career was being a high school woodworking teacher for four years.

Acrylic Pen Turning

No experience required. In this entry level class we will show you how to set up the lathe and guide you through the proper procedure to complete a Slimline acryllic pen. Everyone will turn a pen.

CNC 101: Intro to Software

CNC 101: Intro to Software

6:00pm-8:30pm. Students will follow along with the instructor as he lays out various techniques and discusses several strategies to get the most out of your CNC or Shaper Origin. He will also cover some inexpensive or free software that will give you more options in creating unique projects.

In this class we will demonstrate sharpening lathe tools on the Sorby Pro Edge and the Oneway Wolverine sharpening system. Bring two tools to sharpen.

Pinecone/Epoxy Bowl Class-Two Day Class

Pinecone/Epoxy Bowl Class-Two Day Class

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a bowl from epoxy resin? In this class we will cover the layout, pouring, design, and technique for shaping and finishing such a bowl. This class will use pinecones as a substrate in addition to the resin. Each participant will create and take home their own bowl. In addition to the two evening sessions that will cover turning and finishing (on 8/31 and 9/2 from 6:00 – 9:00PM) this course also include a non-mandatory overview and set-up class session held on August 25th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. This optional course will cover how to create the bowl blank as well as the mixing, coloring, and pouring of the epoxy. Attendance during this set-up class will allow you to choose a color and create your own bowl blank that you will turn in the subsequent sessions. Participants who do not attend this session will turn a pearl-white pigmented bowl blank made by the instructor.

River Table Class-Two Day Class

River Table Class-Two Day Class

Ever thought of making a river table? Mixing epoxy and wood together makes a beautiful combination. All it takes is some time and few materials. This class will show you how to make a form, prep your wood, mix your epoxy, color your epoxy, and extract the finished product from the form. The wood will be ambrosia maple and any coloring of your choice. This class is making the top only. We do ask that you bring a drill (not an impact) to mix the epoxy, and an orbital sander. You can take the finished product home with you. The table will be approximately 24”x16”X1.25”. This is a 2 day class spanning two consecutive Saturdays.

Spindle Turning Fundamentals

No experience required. In this entry level class we will show you how to sharpen and use spindle turning tools including the skew and detail spindle gouge. Several small projects will be turned to be taken home.

Turned Lidded Box

In this unique class students will learn how to make a lidded box on the lathe. Topics covered will include safety, wood selection, design, proper mounting techniques and finish. Everyone will turn a box. Some turning experience is required.

Workbench Class (Two Week Evening Course)

Workbench Class (Two Week Evening Course)

This class will run for two weeks, It will start at 5:30pm and run until 8:30pm on 8/10-8/13, 9:00am -2:00pm on 8/14, 5:30pm-8:30pm on 8/17-8/20 and finishes up 9:00am-2:00pm 8/21 Everyone will build their own workbench out of yellow pine. It will be approximately 22"x 68" x 36" with a solid 4" top. It weighs about 250 lbs. All materials for bench and 20-30 hours of instruction/supervision included. Vises are not included.
